STEM at Oak Ridge Laboratory

Southern Alleghenies Planning and Development Commission (SAP&DC), along with the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), would like to invite students and high school teachers to apply for this year’s summer STEM Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Now in its 30th year, the ARC/ORNL Summer STEM Program is a unique residential learning opportunity for Appalachia’s high school and middle school students, as well as high school teachers. The program is often the first major exposure participating students—many of whom are from Appalachia’s most economically distressed counties—have to applied science and STEM education. Students participate in intensive hands-on science, math, and computer science technology group research projects with award-winning scientists, and the teachers work with science practitioners to develop a STEM-related curriculum.

This year’s program for high school students and teachers will run for two weeks, July 6-19, 2019. The program for middle school students will run for one week, July 13-19, 2019. Up to 52 high school participants (26 students and 26 teachers), and up to 26 middle school students will be accepted. Students will receive transportation to attend the program and full room and board, as well as all expenses paid related to lab work and field trips. Their housing is fully supervised around the clock by program staff. Teachers receive the same package, plus a $1,000 stipend. Chosen students will also receive a $200 stipend provided by SAP&DC to use as spending money over the course of the trip. Please see attached criteria for more participant information.
